On the outskirts of C\u0113sis, in the T\u0101lavas Street area, stands a historic building with two names \u2014 Valent\u012bna Minor Estate, or Florida. This place tells the story of a wealthy city patrician family whose history stretches back to the early 18th century. The patrician Valent\u012bns family first appears in C\u0113sis citizen registers in 1715, with weapons smith Kaspars Nikolajs Valent\u012bns \u2014 a man whose craft seems to have been just as sharp as his surname is romantic. <\/p>\n

The Valent\u012bns family story was far from smooth sailing \u2014 after Kaspars died in 1732, the family lost their ownership rights to the property. It was not until 1759, when others would have long given up, that his son \u2014 C\u0113sis Great Guild elder and merchant Kaspars Fr\u012bdrihs Valent\u012bns \u2014 recovered the minor estate using a restitution protocol. Clearly, his merchant’s shrewdness and persistence were just as impressive as his brood of 11 children from two marriages! <\/p>\n

In the mid-19th century the property passed into the hands of Johans Fr\u012bdrihs Fovelins, a councillor and surveyor, who bought it in 1847 for what was then a considerable sum of 800 roubles. Later, in 1858, the minor estate was purchased for 1,700 roubles by the notable pastor Dr. Pauls Em\u012bls \u0160acs \u2014 a figure whose contribution to Latvian education and culture was immense. As an active member of the Latvian Literary Society (also known as the Latvian Friends Society), he devoted himself to Latvian education and culture, publishing the first readers and song collections for Latvian children. <\/p>\n

Towards the end of the 19th century and into the early 20th, the minor estate acquired a new name \u2014 Florida. The steep slopes, hills, and natural meadows beyond Gl\u016bda Manor were so beautiful that locals and visitors alike were reminded of the American resort destination. And so C\u0113sis got its own Florida, which became a favourite spot for recreation and walking. <\/p>\n

In the 1930s the building went through both a high point and a tragedy. 1933. In 1933 it belonged to Dr. Elizabete Kr\u016bms and was one of the finest summer houses in C\u0113sis, featuring wall paintings by artist \u0160prenkss. Sadly, during Easter preparations in 1933, a devastating fire broke out, destroying both the beautiful summer house and the neighbouring home of carpenter Janit\u0113ns. <\/p>\n

During the Soviet years, Florida Minor Estate housed a children’s home, and was later converted into apartments. Interestingly, a city sobering-up station was set up in the adjacent building in 1986 \u2014 perhaps to help people clear their heads after getting a little carried away by the romantic charms of Florida’s beautiful surroundings. <\/p>\n

Pastor Pauls Em\u012bls \u0160acs, one of the minor estate’s owners, published the first Latvian children’s song collection, “Dziesmi\u0146as latvie\u0161u b\u0113rniem un jaunek\u013ciem”, which included songs with Christian themes as well as nature and seasonal motifs. He was married three times, and his death record states that he died at Florida Minor Estate near C\u0113sis. Even in his final moments, \u0160acs stayed true to his most beloved property! <\/p>\n

  • 1929: Information about the sale of Ernsts Pu\u0137\u012btis’s property \u2014 the summer house “Valent\u012bna”, also known as “Florida” \u2014 is published in the “Vald\u012bbas V\u0113stnesis”.<\/li>\n
  • 1932: Extensive renovation work is carried out on the summer house.<\/li>\n
  • 1933: The owner is Dr. Elizabete Kr\u016bms; during Easter preparations the building is badly damaged in a fire.<\/li>\n
  • 1934: Restoration of the summer house begins.<\/li>\n
  • Soviet period: Florida Minor Estate houses a children’s home, later converted into apartments.<\/li>\n
