K\u012bters Minor Estate, also known locally as “Louisiana”, is one of the most fascinating examples of 18th century wooden architecture, which stood at the junction of Vien\u012bbas Avenue and Len\u010du Street. This building carries the stories of C\u0113sis’s aristocratic past, from its acquisition in the late 18th century right through to the present day. <\/p>\n

The estate’s lands have gone by many names over the years \u2014 \u0136il\u0137ens or St\u0113dme lands, later Fugelings or Pubuli\u0146u lands, because local residents couldn’t pronounce “Fovel\u012bns” and turned it into the easier “Fugelings”. This reflects the mix of languages and cultures that was typical of the Vidzeme region, where people of different backgrounds \u2014 Latvians, Germans, and Russians \u2014 lived side by side for centuries. <\/p>\n

The property took the name “K\u012bters Minor Estate” in 1797, when it was purchased by councillor Zamuels Ludvigs von K\u012bters. His family left a lasting mark not only on the history of C\u0113sis, but on the Russian Empire as a whole. Interestingly, every generation of the family produced at least one notable figure whose name made it into the history books \u2014 from an economy commissioner to a medical scientist who introduced modern surgical methods in 19th century Russia. <\/p>\n

The building’s architecture was just as varied as its history \u2014 with Rococo elements on the second floor, and distinctive doors and staircases from different periods. This mix of architectural styles was likely the owners’ way of signalling their social status \u2014 a very human desire to stand out, not unlike what we see in homeowners today. <\/p>\n

Although the minor estate has been through many changes \u2014 different owners, shifting names, and even wartime destruction \u2014 it has survived to the present day as one of the quiet witnesses to C\u0113sis’s rich history. After World War II, only one building from the complex remained, which was converted into an apartment building, continuing to serve the people of C\u0113sis, albeit in a far more modest role than in its heyday. <\/p>\n

The most notable figure connected to K\u012bters Minor Estate was Just\u012bns Ludvigs Aleksandrs von K\u012bters \u2014 a Baltic German surgeon and gynaecologist who became the founder of surgical gynaecology in Russia and in 1868 was the first in Russia to describe the Listerisation method for wound treatment. <\/p>\n

Local residents, unable to pronounce the surname of one of the later owners \u2014 “Fovel\u012bns” \u2014 turned it into “Fugelings”, and over time the estate’s lands came to be known as “Pubuli\u0146u zemes” \u2014 a vivid example of how language difficulties give rise to new place names.<\/p>\n

  • 1771: The plot of land along Len\u010du Road, also known as \u0136il\u0137ens or St\u0113dme lands, is acquired by Johans Ludvigs Hervagens from guild elder Mrs \u0122ertr\u016bde Elizabete Bandava.<\/li>\n
  • 1797: Johans Ludvigs Hervagens sells the minor estate to councillor Zamuels Ludvigs von K\u012bters for 525 Albert thalers; from this point the property takes the name “K\u012bters Minor Estate”.<\/li>\n
  • 1829: Following the death of Zamuels Ludvigs von K\u012bters, the property is inherited by his son Johans Ludvigs Aleksandrs von K\u012bters, Commissioner of the Riga-C\u0113sis Economy Commission.<\/li>\n
  • 1844: The minor estate is purchased from the von K\u012bters family by C\u0113sis land surveyor Johans Fovel\u012bns for 2,500 silver roubles.<\/li>\n
  • 1868: Just\u012bns Ludvigs Aleksandrs von K\u012bters becomes the first in Russia to describe the Listerisation method for wound treatment.<\/li>\n
  • 1869: The K\u012bters family is entered into the Vidzeme nobility matricula.<\/li>\n
  • 1871: Livonian nobility auditor Voldem\u0101rs Masings draws the map of Louisiana.<\/li>\n
  • 20th century. The minor estate is already being referred to as “Louisiana”.<\/li>\n
  • 1908: On the C\u0113sis map, K\u012bters Minor Estate is already listed as Fugelings lands, and the barracks building has already been built.<\/li>\n
  • 1913: Guido von Zerwald’s study is published, in which K\u012bters Minor Estate \u2014 Louisiana is mentioned as a distinctive and interesting example of 18th century wooden architecture. <\/li>\n
  • 1936: In the tourism publication “C\u0113sis \u2014 Heart of Vidzeme”, K\u0101rlis Dzirkalis writes about the small house once inhabited by the literary figure K\u012bters, referring to it as “Luzanna”.<\/li>\n
  • After 1945: Following World War II, only one building from the minor estate complex survives, which is used as a residential apartment building.<\/li>\n
