Embark on a 10-kilometer journey through Cēsis’ history and architecture! The route begins at the old Horse Post Station, once one of the most important postal stops in Vidzeme. Where postal horses once galloped, you can now rent electric bicycles!
The path leads to Cēsis German Cemetery, where many notable Cēsis residents rest – composer Alfrēds Kalniņš’ parents, the first professional Cēsis photographer, and a Latvian army general. Continuing the walk, you’ll reach the unusual Turkish Soldiers’ Cemetery, where 26 Turkish soldiers are buried who chose to stay in Cēsis after the Russian-Turkish War but couldn’t withstand the northern climate.
The route leads to the impressive Bridge House and picturesque Pirtsupīte ravine, which transformed from Soviet-era “Stink Creek” into a beautiful recreation area. This ravine hosts reconstructions of the famous Battle of Cēsis! It continues to Cēsis Orthodox Church, built on the foundations of the 14th-century St. Catherine’s Church.
The path leads to the “Stone Nest” – a building that briefly served as the Latvian capital’s government residence in 1919, and the adjacent Cēsis Library, where even the French ambassador once stayed.
The route returns to the old town, where you’ll discover the restored Vanadziņš House, the crooked Turkish Bakery or “Cēsis Leaning Tower,” where Turkish prisoners baked excellent bread, and the historic Harmony House where composer Alfrēds Kalniņš was born.
It concludes at Pioneer Square – a green territory preserving an entire layer of city history, as dense development with streets existed here until 1944, destroyed by war damage.
