Begin your journey at the oldest preserved school building in Cēsis – Torņa street 3, where a boys’ elementary school has operated since 1786, with 19th-century student carvings still visible on wooden walls. The route leads to Skolas street 6, where an educational institution has operated for over 200 years – an impressive record in Latvia!
Along the way, you’ll discover Count Mengden’s magnificent wooden house (now a kindergarten), the former German Society progymnasium where the famous Cēsis regiment student company was formed in 1919, and Bērzaine Gymnasium – once one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the entire Russian Empire since 1825.
The route leads to Alfrēds Kalniņš Cēsis Music Secondary School, where the Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra was founded, and the “Stone Nest” – a building that briefly became the Latvian government’s residence in October 1919. You’ll encounter Cēsis 1st Elementary School with over 300 years of history and Miller’s school house, where Alfrēds Kalniņš, composer of the first Latvian national opera “Baņuta,” studied.
The walk concludes at Apkalne Gymnasium building, where many refugees from Courland and Riga found shelter during World War I. Each stop reveals a unique story about educational development and the Latvian people’s spirit that survived through various historical periods.
